Leader Election and Renaming with Optimal Message Complexity

چکیده
Asynchronous message-passing system is a standard distributed model, where n processors communicate over unreliable channels, controlled by a strong adaptive adversary. The asynchronous nature of the system and the fact that t < n/2 processors may fail by crashing are the great obstacles for designing efficient algorithms. Leader election (test-and-set) and renaming are two fundamental distributed tasks. We prove that both tasks can be solved using expected O(n) messages—the same asymptotic complexity as a single all-to-all broadcast—and that this message complexity is in fact optimal. Time and Message Optimal Leader Election in Asynchronous Oriented Complete Networks
We consider the problem of leader election in asynchronous oriented N-node complete networks. We present a leader election algorithm with O(N) message and O(log log N) time complexity. The message complexity is optimal and the time complexity is the best possible under the assumption of message optimality. The best previous leader election algorithm for asynchronous oriented complete networks b...
متن کاملEecient Leader Election Using Sense of Direction *
This paper presents a protocol for leader election in complete networks with a sense of direction. Sense of direction provides nodes the capability of distinguishing between their incident links according to a global scheme. We propose a protocol for leader election which requires O(N) messages and O(log N) time. The protocol is message optimal and the time complexity is a signiicant improvemen...
متن کاملSublinear Bounds for Randomized Leader Election
This paper concerns randomized leader election in synchronous distributed networks. A distributed leader election algorithm is presented for complete n-node networks that runs in O(1) rounds and (with high probability) uses only O( √ n log n) messages to elect a unique leader (with high probability). When considering the “explicit” variant of leader election where eventually every node knows th...
متن کاملSimple Randomized Leader Election with Extensions**
Leader election causes a unique processor to be distinguished from among a collection of processors. As the study of this problem progressed, increasingly e cient, then more general algorithms emerged. Eventually, Las Vegas algorithms for leader election on rings with identi ers and for those without that achieve asymptotically optimal expected message and bit communication complexity emerged (...
متن کاملA Modified Leader Election Algorithm for MANET
Distributed systems are the backbone of modern day computing services. A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a collection of mobile nodes that can communicate via message passing over wireless links. Communication takes place directly between nodes which are in transmission range of each other else communication is done through message relay. A MANET is different from existing distributed network ...
